An enchanting place in the middle of the Dolomites, between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Badia: this is the Fanes hut, one of the best equipped in the whole alpine range, easily accessible (also thanks to the shuttle service by jeep offered by the managers ) in the summer season, from June to September, and in the winter season, from 25 December to the beginning of April.
The history of this refuge, which is a few kilometers from San Vigilio di Marebbe, is particular and deserves a detailed mention. In the years before the First World War, the localities of the area already had structures dedicated to the hospitality of travelers, even if one could not speak properly of tourism. After the war events and the construction of a considerable amount of roads to connect regiments and facilitate the work of ordnance, the number of people who arrived in the area of Plan de Corones mostly to ski grew considerably. At the time (and even nowadays), the point of reference for staying was the Hotel Posta, managed by the Mutschlechner family. Having realized that this structure was no longer sufficient to manage the flow of skiers, the young members of the family built the Fanes hut, in 1928, which became a true branch of the hotel in town. Alfred Mutschlechner, one of the brothers, took over the refuge and made it the feather in the cap of mountain shelters, innovating the criteria of hospitality and offer, until 1978, when, after 50 years of uninterrupted work, passed the structure in the hands of his son Max, who is still in charge of the Fanes.
Equipped with 70 beds, the refuge offers, in addition to the classic Alpine restaurant, the possibility of organizing events such as dinners and lunches, weddings banquets and even unusual days of team building and company conventions outside the modern canonical schemes. Around, the unique setting of the Dolomites, with various possibilities, summer and winter, to fully enjoy the nature and the territory, with hiking trails, via ferrata, the possibility of ski mountaineering, climbing and mountaineering on many variations at the turn of Plan de Corones, Val Badia and Ampezzo.
To reach the Fanes hut by foot, you can take the trails that depart from La Valle, from San Leonardo in Badia and from San Cassiano. In winter these itineraries are suitable for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing, and there is the possibility to take the snowcat in Pederü.
